The Hop pot is ready

Here's the container I am going to grow my hops in. I mixed up some soil and put these bamboo things in for it to vine on. I am still not sure what variety I'll be growing. Freshops is going to start selling rhizomes tomorrow, so I'll see then.

It was nice to get my hands dirty.

  1. I'm going to the nearby "Gardening Center" today and I'm going to look for some hops. Are there any types of hops that are rare in the US but possibly not here? My hops knowledge is limited. : (

  2. The UK leaves are all imported to the States but the hop rhizomes (the root things that you plant) are all pretty rare. We can get Golding and Fuggle here but all of the newer cultivars from Wye College (which seems to be the UK equivalent of Oregon St.) are hard to find. This year in the States we can get Challenger and Viking. I like some of the others though like Target and Northdown. Good old Fuggle and Goldings would be great hops to start with though.
